Scout O at Highland Forrest

posted Nov 5, 2012, 5:04 PM by Al Dominy
We had a nice group of scouts participate in the annual Scout O orienteering event at Highland Forrest this weekend. The event was put on by the CNYO orienteering club. We had a bit of a rough start to the day. Since we had not been trained in orienteering, finding the event was a bit of a challenge.

Once we got rolling things went great. I would like to say thank you to our volunteer guide John for taking the time to lead us through an training course and teach us much about orienteering. Our scouts learned about the compass, our directions North, South East and West. Also John taught us how to read the map and what the symbols in the key mean for orienteers.

The group had a good time despite the weather which was a bit cool. As you can see below there was a light dusting of snow for the event.

The terrain was treacherous at times...

The hills were steep...

But in the end this tough group prevailed...

Two scouts enjoyed it so much they did the independent course without a professional guide.

Great job to all. It was a fantastic event and we look forward to repeating it next year.
